MILES FOR A MIRACLE

A Bike Ride Fundraiser for Cancer Research

Benefiting the Team Lydia Science Fund

Hosted by Justin Peyret

June 27, 2024

Donate. Ride. Fight Cancer.

This June, Justin is partnering with the Team Lydia Osteosarcoma Science Fund at the Osteosarcoma Institute to raise much-needed research funds. On June 27, 2024, starting at 4:00 a.m., Justin will complete a 200-mile ride around Lake Tahoe with an 18-20K foot elevation gain. Whether you donate per mile that Justin rides or challenge yourself to a ride, every action meaningfully contributes to the cure! Anyone with a stationary or road bike can participate and try to conquer as many miles as they can and donate per mile completed.

Contact Justin on Instagram @traineverydaycyclist or via email at justinpeyret@gmail.com for more information about the route and to join the cycling community for this event!

Why Justin Rides For Osteosarcoma

Justin learned of osteosarcoma through his high school friends, Jessica and Steve Alwan, Lydia’s parents. “Personally, I never knew what osteosarcoma was until I saw the Alwans share their daughter Lydia was battling cancer for the second time.” Now, Lydia is joyfully celebrating 2.5 years of being cancer free! Along with her family and friends, she continues to fight for others facing this terrible disease.

2021

Lydia’s 2nd battle with osteosarcoma included chemotherapy and two limb salvage surgeries. In 2021, Justin completed his 1st ride to help support Lydia’s osteosarcoma treatment expenses.

2024

Lydia is celebrating 2.5 years of being cancer-free! This is Justin’s 3rd ride in support of Lydia. 100% of proceeds will go toward osteosarcoma research to give hope to kids in active treatment.

Lydia’s Story

At age 7, Lydia had a painful lump on her thigh bone that her doctors found difficult to diagnose. Multiple rounds of chemotherapy and two limb salvage surgeries later, Lydia prevailed over osteosarcoma. She wants to help children who are currently battling osteosarcoma, and ultimately, find a cure. Her family has established the Team Lydia Science Fund with the Osteosarcoma Institute to help fund much needed frontline research.

Approximately 4% of federal cancer research funding goes toward all childhood cancers. Within that allotment, rare pediatric cancers only receive a small fraction of a percent. Osteosarcoma is very rare and therefore receives little funding and research attention. This means that we in the private sector have a momentous opportunity to fill this critical gap.

At the OSI, we fund cutting-edge clinical trials, correlative studies, and translational studies, all powered by collaboration among the top professionals in osteosarcoma in the country. When you support the Team Lydia Osteosarcoma Science Fund at the OSI, you are supporting real outcomes for osteosarcoma patients.

What We Do

Our Strategy

Globally estimated, there are over 26,000 new cases of osteosarcoma diagnosed each year, with 1,000 being diagnosed in the US, but treatment options haven’t advanced in 40 years. To find a cure for osteosarcoma, we have to collaborate, innovate, and translate around the most promising science.

Our Mission

The Osteosarcoma Institute’s mission is to dramatically increase treatment options and survival rates in osteosarcoma patients through identifying and funding the most promising and breakthrough osteosarcoma clinical trials and science.

Our Story

The OSI was initially conceived at an osteosarcoma expert panel conference held in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the summer of 2015. Over the course of the conference, the evidence showed that there had been no progress in osteosarcoma treatments over the past ten years (in fact, over the past 35 years). A stark consensus emerged that the existing, traditional paradigm for seeking advancements had failed and a new paradigm was needed.

Research

We work together with the research, pharma, and clinical communities, monitor and develop the scientific landscape around OS to identify opportunities and accelerate progress.

Patient Support

OSI Connect is the OSI’s free resource for patients who have been diagnosed with osteosarcoma or suffered a relapse after initial treatment. This resource helps patients, families, and caregivers find answers to their questions.

OSI

Fund Advancements

We fund clinical trials, translational grants, and osteosarcoma science to identify new treatment options for osteosarcoma patients for whom the first line of therapy has failed.

Osteosarcoma Statistics

Our Impact

Funding, removing obstacles, raising awareness & working together. The Osteosarcoma Institute funds breakthrough clinical trials and science to identify new treatments, and ultimately a cure for osteosarcoma.
